Match report
Games between South London Casuals (formerly Sporting 50 Reserves) and Wanderers over the past 18 months have been entertaining, goal-filled affairs. This latest instalment in the saga was no exception. From being 3-0 up inside the first 35 minutes, Wanderers and the Casuals finished 4-4 at full time. The game started with the most ridiculous sin-bin offence for Peter (who had a great game after that) and ended with a late effort for Casuals ruled out for offside in the dying minutes. The game started with the Casuals in the ascendancy; dominating possession and creating opportunities down the flanks as often as possible. Wanderers, who were lined up in a changed 5-3-2 shape from the commonly used 4-3-3, were comfortable out of possession, maintaining a solid shape and limiting South London to a couple of shots from difficult angles and under pressure. Then, in Wanderers first moment of applying pressure to the Casuals rearguard, Elliot gave Wanderers the lead. After chasing down an overhit pass across the penalty area, Peter Harris, gathered the ball, avoided a challenge and proded a pass into Elliot's path. Then, having slalomed his way past two defenders in the box, Elliot smashed a shot low at the near post with too much power for the keeper to handle. Within a few minutes, Wanderers had doubled their lead. A swift counter attack after pressing the opposition within their own half saw Ryan and Elliot combine with the later dinking an audacious pass over the covering defender for Tom Willis to run onto. Willis then lofted the ball high over the stranded goal keeper and into the net. Elliot then put the boys from Dulwich in dreamland with his second and Wanderers 3rd after 35 minutes, scoring with a header from a wicked cross from the right by Deshaan. For most teams, a 3-0 lead should signal the end of the game as a contest but Wanderers aren't most teams and matches against South London Casuals are rarely ever that straightforward. 5 minutes after scoring their third, Wanderers gave away a penalty against the run of play; George Amankwaa adjudged to have barged over the Casuals centre forward under the slightest amount of contact as the ball was running out of play near to the goal. The penalty was emphatically dispatched despite Anes getting a hand to the ball. Then, with the half nearing it's conclusion, South London scored again, this time with a route one ball over the top of the Wanderers defence and, with the already cautioned George on close pursuit but conscious of his precarious position, the forward was able to rifle a fine strike into the top corner of Anes' net. Halftime came and went but it was the Casuals who had the momentum and deservedly equalised within the first 5 mins of the second half. A free kick from wide on the right flank was floated into the box and a Casuals midfielder managed to get inbetween Michael Kane and Max Anderson at the back post to steer a header beyond Anes. For the majority of the second half, both teams took turns to exert pressure on one another and string together some great attacking moves. The three young musketeers (Max, Darren Gompe and Alan Adekoya) were showing bravery as well as skill on the ball and Alan - who was making his debut - was set free by Tom Willis and managed to win his one on one duel with the opposition keeper to restore Wanderers' lead. However, the Casuals grabbed another equaliser from another set piece. This time, the delivery from the right was finished at the near post with a glancing header. POTM: Elliot matched his goal tally for last season with his brace today and added an assist. The numbers only tell a part of the story as he (and Max at left wing back) were a constant thorn in the South London sides. Carrying the game to the opposition, the man is like a Swiss army knife - capable of doing anything with an unfathomable array of skills.
